What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate which has been processed into an insulation material since the early 1900s. It was widely used because of its chemical and heat resistant properties.

Asbestos is best known by its colours

  1. Blue Asbestos (Crocidolite) most commonly used for spraying coatings and insulation lagging. With brown asbestos, blue asbestos is considered as more dangerous than white.
  2. Brown Asbestos (Amosite) used in thermal insulation and board.
  3. White Asbestos (Chrysotile) is most commonly used in domestic appliances and building.

The Effects of Asbestos

The inhalation of asbestos fibres can result in a person suffering from a number of different medical conditions which affect the lungs.
