Pleural ThickeningPleural Thickening

What is it?

Pleural Thickening is the thickening of the pleura which surrounds the lung. It is caused by the inhalation of asbestos dust and is more serious than Pleural Plaques and can cause pain and disability.

How is it detected?

Pleural Thickening is shown up on an X-ray. Normally, people are not aware that they have the early stages of Pleural Thickening until they are referred for an X-ray by their GP. Pleural Thickening can cause breathlessness but many people associate the breathlessness with old age and are not aware that they are suffering from lung disease.

Can I claim?

If you are suffering from Pleural Thickening then you can claim compensation. Compensation is awarded by the Court, not only for the pain and disability  aused by the Pleural Thickening but also for the mental anxiety of a sufferer due to the fact that a sufferer with Pleural Thickening has an increased risk of developing a malignant condition due to the asbestos fibres. If the Pleural Thickening is severe then it is also possible to claim for loss of earnings, any aids and adaptations that may be required, and care provided by the family or nurses.

What happens if any former employers are no longer trading?

Over the years many companies have ceased trading. However, it is still possible to claim compensation if you or your solicitor can trace the insurer for the company.

Oxley & Coward have been trusted with hundreds of asbestos cases and have built up an extensive database of insurers for many companies. Therefore, it is possible that we already know the insurer for the company that you worked for.
